Your Bill of Rights as Our Child

May 5, 2011
We believe any and every child should be raised with the following rights:

  • the right to be an object of unconditional parental love
  • the right, for a time, to be the center of our attention and to have your needs met without asking
  • the right to childhood innocence, and to be protected from traumatic situations and stresses
  • the right to belong to a family and a community
  • the right to consistency, limits, security, warmth, and understanding
  • the right to be loved for who you are, rather than for being what others want you to become
  • the right to be parented and nutured, rather than falling under the weight of making up for the losses of parents
  • the right to feel safe while mastering a full range of normal feelings and emotions
  • the right to make decisions and learn from mistakes
  • the right to become independent and find your own voice
  • the right to grieve losses as they happen
  • the right to have emotional and physical boundaries

The favorite stories read again and again,
And hours of games with make-believe friends.

The day you took my o...
